PDFElement: controlsList property

Works in all major browsers
Since July 2026

WebPDF works in Chrome and Edge 125, Firefox 153 and Safari 18, on desktop and mobile, and in every later version: the oldest versions its PDF.js build supports, which already have every platform feature WebPDF needs. Since July 2026, that is every major browser.

The controlsList property of the PDFElement interface returns a live DOMTokenList of the controls this element leaves out, like HTMLMediaElement.controlsList: parts of the bar and its menu, the whole bar, or the gestures. It reflects the controlslist HTML attribute.

Value

A DOMTokenList of the element's own tokens:

nopaging

‹ › and the page number; First page and Last page.

norotation

⟲ ⟳.

noscale

− % +.

nofullscreen

⛶.

norenderer

PDF.js, PDFium, SVG.

nolayers

Text layer, Annotations.

nosignatures

Signature cards, … on every page.

nocopy

Copy image, Copy as data URL.

nodownload

Save, Save form data.

noopen

Open…, Open form data….

notoolbar

The whole bar, and with it the menu.

nogestures

The swipes, the two-finger twist and the sideways wheel, which then do nothing: two fingers zoom the browser again.

As with <video>, a token only leaves controls out of the bar and the menu: their keys and gestures keep working. notoolbar leaves out the whole bar, and nogestures turns the gestures off; the keys always work. controlsList.supports(token) tells you whether a token is one of these.

The attribute is multi-homed: the tokens of the <script>, the file and the page add up, -token drops an inherited one and a bare - drops them all.

Examples

A read-only viewer

Pages, zoom and fullscreen only: no renderer switch, no copying, no saving, no opening.

HTML

html
<pdf-file id=f src=//pdf.ist/web.pdf></pdf-file>
<pdf-page of=f controls controlslist="norenderer nolayers nocopy nodownload noopen" scale=0.5></pdf-page>

Result

Feature detection

js
const page = document.querySelector("pdf-page");
if (page.controlsList.supports("nocopy")) page.controlsList.add("nocopy");

Specifications

Not part of any specification. <pdf-file> and <pdf-page> are autonomous custom elements defined by WebPDF.pro.
